MECSPE Business Stories #4: Alessandro Sorgato, Sorma SpA

The fourth instalment of MECSPE Business Stories features Alessandro Sorgato, Sales Director of Sorma S.p.A., a long-standing MECSPE exhibitor in the Machine Tools sector.

In the tooling sector for the mechanical engineering industry, what are the main emerging trends that will have a significant impact in the coming years?

"The precision engineering industry has had to address increasingly complex challenges, such as the need to offset the decline in automotive-related orders by shifting towards other sectors—which often require machining materials such as superalloys and ultra-high-strength materials, as well as specific expertise—rising energy and raw material costs, difficulties in recruiting qualified personnel, and the challenge of planning around long-term orders. In this scenario, high-performance tooling is the starting point. Sorma’s range of tools for the mechanical engineering industry spans multiple sectors, with indexable and solid tools complemented by solutions from leading brands such as Yamawa for threading, Kemmer for grooving and parting, and LMT for rolling. Workshop managers need a strategic partner capable of providing not only the tools themselves, but also dedicated technical support and tailored services. Today, with the help of artificial intelligence, it is also possible to monitor critical parameters such as abnormal vibrations or cutting-edge wear, turning process data into operational safety: early detection optimises machining, eliminates unplanned downtime, and ensures tolerances meet design requirements".

How confident are you about the market’s development over the 2026–2027 period?

"The uncertainty that has characterised the market in recent years will continue to leave its mark in the years ahead, particularly in the short to medium term. Nevertheless, precisely because our offering spans the mechanical engineering industry, we are confident that we can respond effectively to market challenges. Although some segments are struggling more than others, certain areas—such as the energy sector, across its various niches—are expanding, and Italy plays a leading role in them. We want to be part of this growth by delivering high-quality, targeted customer service, with fast supplies, training, and technical support in selecting the most suitable tools to make processes more efficient".

Why did you choose to participate in MECSPE 2026?

"After several years away, we returned to MECSPE in 2025 to mark our 75th anniversary and, given the outcome, confirmed our participation for the following year. The event is undoubtedly an important showcase for the manufacturing industry: for Sorma, it has become the key event in Italy, enabling us to give the market a preview of the new products and innovations we are introducing within the company".

Among the objectives for your presence at the trade fair, what were your main priorities?

"Launching new products is certainly an important objective, and an event such as MECSPE provides the ideal setting to showcase them. Another major advantage is face-to-face networking with our customers and potential customers, as well as direct contact with industry professionals: especially for those who do not yet know us, even a brief meeting can establish a connection that often develops into a lasting partnership. Finally, it should be emphasised that these recent years have marked a turning point for us: we have brought together our proprietary offering of two product lines—indexable tools and solid tools—under the single Sorma brand, in a catalogue containing more than 13,300 items. This is an important step, accompanied by a redesign of Sorma’s visual identity with more modern and appealing graphics, which an in-person event allows us to present to best effect".

Considering the contacts generated and the opportunities developed, how do you assess the return on investment from participating in MECSPE 2026?

"We are so pleased with the results achieved through our participation over the past two years that we have been able to confirm our presence at the next edition. We expect a large audience with a strong interest in our offering, which goes beyond simply supplying products to encompass a comprehensive, 360-degree service proposition".
